Sound Of Barra Integrated Transport Project
Eriskay - 5th August 2000
On the Eriskay side - By August 5, the core extended to 420 metres from the shore (at an average of 3.0m below full planned height). Rock armouring to core was continuing with 80,000 tonnes of rock placed, extracted from Eriskay where the rock cut is 130 metres into the hill below the church.
On the Uist side - the causeway core has advanced 400 metres (at an average of two metres below full planned height). Rock armouring continues and 100,000 tonnes of rock have been placed, extracted from the nearby quarry.
At Ceann a Gharaidh - At Ceann a Gharaidh, the Eriskay terminal for the planned ferry to Barra, a temporary access road has been completed from road to marshalling area, an access track into the marshalling area is under construction, and the rock cut is continuing along line of access road - with drilling, blasting, and excavating.
The target date for the gap closure core only, not full height - is still planned for mid November.
