What amounts to the biggest programme of road construction in the history of Eriskay is now set to become the focus of construction work related to the Island¹s causeway.
On the approach road from the causeway which sweeps below the church to join the village road opposite the school, rock excavation was completed and ditching and reinstatement works were in progress in the week to March 10.
Services installation was set to start in the next few days.
Meanwhile, on the other main stretch of new road on the Island, the access road to Ceann a Gharaidh ferry terminal cutting and filling was substantially complete and ditching was in progress.
Causeway
- Rock armouring : nearing 85 per cent complete
- Parapet wall 870m, 26 per cent complete
- Total rock placed : 630,000 tonnes : about 90 per cent of final quantity
Bridge
- Structural concrete completed
- Parapet concrete walls in progress
- Opening of bridge to construction traffic planned for late March
- Diversion fill to be removed soon after bridge is in use
Uist Quarry
Drilling, blasting & excavating rock over 85 per cent complete
Eriskay Approach Road
- Rock excavation completed
- Ditching and reinstatement works in progress
- Services installation to start next week
Weather: Mostly fine; some mist and wind at times
Personnel: 56 total employed on site (including 2 CNES), 64% resident in the Western Isles.
