Sound Of Barra Integrated Transport Project

On the Eriskay side - In the week up to August 21 mainly concentrated on rock armouring for the causeway core created so far. A barge transferred the special long reach machine from the Uist side to Eriskay . The causeway core extended to 500 metres from the shore using a total of 98,000 tonnes of rock, all extracted from Eriskay.
On the Uist side - The causeway core has extended 460 metres from the shore and rock armouring to the core was also progressing a total of 137,000 tonnes of rock have been placed, extracted from the nearby quarry. The diversion around where the bridge section in the final causeway will be has progressed 20 metres. The diversion is to run parallel with and to the west side of the causeway for approximately 100metres allowing the bridge to be constructed and link the two arms of the causeway.
At Ceann a Gharaidh - the ferry terminal on Eriskay for the proposed Sound of Barra ferry the first blast was set off in the marshalling area.
