Sound Of Barra Integrated Transport Project

Eriskay - 28th October 2000

Employment: A total of 70 people were employed on the project in the week ending October 28 and they faced wet and windy weather.

On the Eriskay side: The causeway core extended to 860m from shore (ave. 2.5m below full height) and 185,000 tonnes of rock had been placed in total, extracted from Eriskay where the rock cut for the access road reached 480m inland from the shore.

On the Uist side: Causeway construction was continuing on south side of bridge site - 580m from shore (average 2.3m below full height) with 210,000 tonnes of rock placed, extracted from the Glendale quarry.

Overall: The rock placed is approaching 60% of final quantity. Rock armouring to the cores continued on both sides of the strait.

Temporary slipway: On the east side of causeway (needed because the causeway will soon cut the ferry route with only 210 metres left to go) the timber alignment structure was nearing completion, and the diver work was complete. Ferry facilities will be ready for ferries to move over in the week commencing 6th November.
