Removing the bypass
Another major step towards the completion of the Causeway took place in the week up to March 31 with the opening of the bridge section and work starting on removing the bypass section.
Causeway
- Core level raised to an average of 0.5m below final level
- Rock armouring to core in progress : approaching 90 per cent complete
- Stone parapet walls continuing both sides from Eriskay : 1270m complete, 38 per cent
- Total rock placed : over 655,000 tonnes : approaching 95 per cent of final quantity
Bridge
Bridge
- Bridge opened to construction traffic on March 26
- Diversion fill removal begun on March 26 - 50 per cent complete - excavated material used in causeway construction
Uist Quarry
Drilling, blasting & excavating rock over 90 per cent complete

Eriskay Approach Road
- 1000m water pipe installed along Eriskay cut and the causeway
- 500m electricity cable installed along the causeway
- Ditching and reinstatement works in progress
Weather: Mostly fine and mild; some wind and showers later in the week
Personnel: 56 total employed on site (including 2 CnES), 60% resident in the Western Isles.
